History
According to tradition, Csorna was founded in 1180, although the first documentary reference to it is from 1226. In 1786, Emperor Joseph II suppressed the priory, but Francis II re-established it as the Abbey of Csorna in 1802. The monastery was suppressed once more in 1950 under the Communist regime.
The priory's church, originally built in 13th century, was damaged by fire several times over the centuries. The most recent reconstruction work on it was completed in 1804. Today the site houses a museum.
