History
The Premonstratensian priory of Türje was founded by Dénes Szentgróti by 1230. His nephew, Fülöp Szentgróti, obtained significant privileges from the papacy for the monastery in the 1260s.
The brothers were expelled from Türje ca. 1550 as a result of the Reformation. The priory was re-established in 1720, but it was suppressed by Emperor Joseph II in 1785. In 1802, the Premonstratensians were allowed to return.
Türje was an independent abbey from then until 1950, when the Hungarian Communist regime. Today the former monastic complex is a retirement home.
