History

The priory of Gyulafirátót was founded by Mátyás, archbishop of Esztergom and member of the Rátót kindred, around 1240. The house was closely associated with the Rátót kindred. Little is known about the internal history of the priory. The community was likely destroyed in warfare in the 1550s, and by 1685 the priory's remains were in a ruinous state.

Substantial ruins remain on the site, which were partially renovated in the 1920s and excavated in the mid-20th century.
