History
A Premonstratensian abbey was present in Litomyšl from the mid-12th century, likely at the instigation of Jindřich Zdík, bishop of Olomouc. In 1344, it was elevated to the status of a cathedral chapter and its church was greatly expanded. However, following the occupation of Litomyšl by Hussites in the 1420s, the diocese suspended its functions and in 1474 was formally reabsorbed by the archdiocese of the Prague.
The Premonstratensian community continued to exist until the mid-16th century when it was dissolved. Their former church, located on approximately the site of the later Litomyšl Castle, was demolished in the early modern period.
