History

This abbey was first founded in Brzesko ca. 1146 by the knights Strzeżysław of Sulimów and Wrocisław of Gierałtów. Its first members came from the monastery of Strahov. It was initially a double house, but by the end of the century the sisters had moved to Zwierzyniec.

In 1279, the community moved to Nowé Brzesko and then to Hebdow. It was an important regional abbey in the Middle Ages, but after the Reformation, it went into decline, exacerbated by the fact that the abbots from that point were selected by the Polish kings.

Much of the monastic complex was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. Brzesko was suppressed in 1819, and its abbey church become the parish church. The abbey church was seriously damaged in a fire in 1859. Since 1949, it has been a Piarist community.
