History
In ca. 1130, Wéry II and Adélaïde, lord and lady of Walcourt, founded a monastery at Freistroff, which was home to Cistercian nuns by 1147.
Around the turn of the 13th century, Freistroff appears to have been briefly occupied by a group of Premonstratensian men from Metz and Justemont, on the initiative of Bertram, bishop of Metz. This period of the abbey's history is obscure.
From 1208, Freistroff was once more a Cistercian community. The abbey was suppressed at the Revolution and the remains of the monastic complex were destroyed during World War Two.
