History

This community was founded 1117/1119 at Bony as an Augustinian double house. The men moved to Mont-Saint-Martin in 1136 and joined the Premonstratensian Order at around the same time. It became a commendatory abbey in 1556. Badly damaged in warfare in 1588, it was deserted between 1584 and 1598 and again from 1636 to 1664. It underwent a major reconstruction project in the mid-18th century.

The abbey was suppressed at the Revolution. It passed into private hands and was turned into a château, much of which was destroyed during World War One.
