History
Étival was likely founded in the mid-7th century as a community of canons. From 1145, it was a Premonstratensian house. It was likely a double house at its origin, and later was a house of just men. The abbot of Étival was a vassal of the powerful abbess of Andlau.
Étival became a commendatory abbey in the 1770s. The abbey's tower was destroyed in 1944.
