History

The abbey of Saint-Marien at Auxerre was first founded in the early fifth century as the monastery of Saint-Cosmas and abandoned by the early 10th century. In the 1130s, Ithier, a cathedral canon of Auxerre sought to re-establish a monastic community on the site.

The abbey was frequently attacked during the Hundred Years' War, and became a commendatory abbey in 1540. Saint-Marien was suppressed at the Revolution and subsequently demolished.
