Charles-Louis Hugo is one of the most important figures in the early modern historiography of the Premonstratensian Order. His Annales—about which I’ve written before on this blog—remain a key source for anyone researching the Premonstratensians during the Middle Ages. I’ve spent some time this summer at the Bibliothèque Stanislas in Nancy, working with his “notebooks”—really hefty compendia of research notes and source transcriptions, often stretching to several hundred pages, which were later gathered into a set of 18 hardbound volumes. Hugo used these notebooks in the preparation of the Annales, a work which remained unfinished at his death.

Each notebook is organised roughly alphabetically (in Latin) and by Premonstratensian community. This post provides an indication as to which house is referenced in which notebook. While Ursmer Berlière published a description of a number of Hugo’s manuscripts in the 1890s, he was far from exhaustive. I’m posting this listing here in the hopes it will be useful to other researchers of the order.

Some of the notebook volumes are foliated and some are paginated. Some have handwritten tables of contents in later hands, of greater or lesser degrees of accuracy, and some do not. I’ve indicated below which is which. I have listed the communities using their modern vernacular names, where known, and in the order in which they first appear in a given notebook.
