History
Frauenkron was established in 1253 as a Cistercian community, likely by Mathilde, countess of Dollendorf and Kronenburg. In 1289, the eight sisters of the house transferred their community and their patronage rights over the parish church of Aldendorp to the Premonstratensian abbey of Steinfeld.
In 1300, the Frauenkron affiliated with the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, and appears to have been dissolved shortly afterwards.
The former monastic chapel, now dedicated to St Barbara, survives, although it was substantially rebuilt in the 1680s and was badly damaged during the Second World War.
