History
A leper hospital was founded at Appleby in the early 13th century, on a site in a loop of the River Eden. In 1241, John de Veteripont gave the establishment to the Premonstratensian abbey of Shap. Under the terms of the grant, the abbey was required to maintain three lepers there in perpetuity.
The hospital was suppressed at the Reformation. A later farmhouse now stands on the site.
