History

Fearn Abbey was established in the early 13th century by a group of brothers from Whithorn Priory. The community moved ten miles to the southeast in 1238 in search of a more favourable location. Fearn Abbey was particularly patronised by the earls of Ross. The monastic complex was enlarged in the mid-15th century.

Following the Reformation, Fearn's church remained in use as a Church of Scotland parish church. It was substantially rebuilt in the 1770s, with further restoration work carried out 2002-03. As of 2023, it is no longer in use as a church.
