History
The monastery of St James, Mainz, was founded ca. 1051 as a Benedictine community. For a brief period at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century, it was a Premonstratensian community, first as a priory and then as an abbey. It then once more became a Benedictine house until its suppression in 1802.
Nothing remains from the Premonstratensian period of the abbey.
