History
Sankt Salvator was founded ca. 1289 as a hermitage by by Wernhard and Friedrich Pöringer. It became a Premonstratensian house from 1309, first as a priory dependent on Osterhofen and then from 1441 as an abbey.
Sankt Salvator suffered financial difficulties but expanded greatly in the mid-15th century through imperial patronage and an energetic prior. A fire destroyed much of the monastic complex in 1632. Its 17th-century church is now the parish church.
The abbey was secularized in 1803, and part of the monastery was turned into a brewery. From ca. 1900 the abbey church became the parish church of the town of Sankt Salvator.
