History

Mariatal was a community of sisters dependent on the Premonstratensian abbey of Weissenau, and lay about half a kilometre from it. Mariatal's church was dedicated in 1166. At the turn of the 13th century it was home to some 90 sisters. However, the community shrank in size over the course of the 14th century and it is last attested in 1349.

From the 1660s, the sisters' church served a parish church, and is now a chapel associated with the cemetery of Weissenau. Until the early 20th century the former monastic complex housed a brickworks.
