History

Berentrop was founded according to tradition ca. 1164 under the patronage of the knightly family of Ardey (Ardeia), and certainly by 1220. It was perhaps a double monastery initially. From 1324, Berentrop had a prior instead of a provost; from the 1350s, it was a dependent parish church on Scheda and home to a single brother.

By the 1660s, the church was in use by a Lutheran congregation. Much of the building complex was destroyed by fire in 1815.

(This place has often been confused with the late medieval fortified church at Berndorf.)
