History

Gottstatt was founded in 1255 by Rudolf I, count of Neuenburg-Nidau. Its church, consecrated in 1345, would become the dynastic burial site first for that comital family and then for the Counts of Kyburg-Burgdorf.

Gottstatt, the only Germanophone house in the circary of Burgundy, was a popular pilgrimage site and also housed a school. The monastic complex was severely damaged in the Gugler War of 1375.

Gottstatt was suppressed in 1528. Its former abbey church now serves as a Protestant parish church.

Not to be confused with Gottesstadt (Germany).
