History

Gottestadt was founded ca. 1231 by the Margraves Johann I and Otto III of Brandenburg. It initially had an attached hospital. The Premonstratensian community appears to have died out by 1258, when the Margrave Johann gave the property to the Cistercian Order.

Some ruins of Gottestadt's church could still be seen in the 1860s.

Not to be confused with Gottstatt (Switzerland).
