History

The priory of Csút was founded by Bela IV, King of Hungary, in 1264 on a site on an island in the Danube on the southern edge of Budapest. Despite its royal connections, this was never a large or wealthy house.

In 1475, Sixtus IV gave it to the Hermits of St Paul (Pauline Order), and it was likely abandoned as a monastic site by 1526. The ruins of the monastic complex, once located on the eastern edge of the island, are likely lost to riverine erosion.
