History
Almaș was originally a Benedictine community. It seems to have been Premonstratensian for a brief period in the mid-13th century. The local nobility, particularly the Kán and Geregye families, were key patrons.
Its history is obscure, and its exact location is uncertain. Backmund states that it was located between Cluj and Oradea Mare, but there are a number of villages in that area whose names are Almaș or a variant. It most likely stood approximately on the site of the later Almaș Castle.
