History

Septfontaines was founded ca. 1125, and joined the Premonstratensian Order in the late 1130s. The abbey experienced economic difficulties in the mid-13th century, and a major fire in 1331.

Septfontaines became a commendatory abbey in 1622. The abbey was suppressed in 1790. The site has been in private hands since the 19th century.

Not to be confused with Septfontaines-en-Thiérache (comm. Fagnon).
