History

Lidlum was founded ca. 1181/82 by two laymen, Sibon and Tjalling. It was an Augustinian house for a brief period before joining the Prmeonstratensian Order in 1182 as a priory dependent on Mariengaarde. It was initially a double house. Lidlum's church was consecrated ca. 1260, and later in the 13th century it was elevated to an abbey. It was heavily involved in the maintenance of coastal dikes.

The abbey of Lidlum was suppressed ca. 1580, and the monastic complex was soon demolished. The former site was excavated in the mid-20th century.
