History

Thenailles was founded by Barthélemy, bishop of Laon. The first brothers came from Saint-Martin de Laon. The abbey was badly damaged by warfare in the 14th and 15th centuries, with its church burned down in 1412. It became a commendatory abbey in 1539.

Thenailles underwent a programme of reconstruction work in the first half of the 18th century. It was suppressed in 1790. Most of the monastic complex was demolished in the 1790s.
