History
Zsámbek was founded in 1220 by the Smaragd (or Zsámbéki) kindred. The church was badly damaged on a number of occasions in the Middle Ages, during the Mongol invasion in 1241, and a major fire in the 15th century.
Zsámbek was given to the Pauline fathers in the late 15th century. During Turkish rule, the monastery was suppressed and the site was fortified. It was badly damaged during an earthquake in the 18th century.
The site was excavated in the 1930s.
