History
The monastery San Miguel de Villamayor de Treviño was founded in 1166 by Nuño Gutierrez, Gonzálo Pérez de Padilla, and their families. It was initially a double house. Toward the end of the 16th century, the monastery was reconstructed.
The abbey was suppressed in 1835, and by the end of the 19th century much of the monastic complex was demolished. Today only part of an exterior gateway survives.
