History
Saint-Paul de Verdun was founded in the late 10th century, outside of the city walls. It became a Premonstratensian abbey in 1135. It was initially a double house.
In 1552, the abbey moved from its original location inside the city walls. It was briefly a commendatory abbey in the late 15th century, and again from 1538.
The abbey of Verdun was suppressed in 1790. The former monastic complex now houses the palais de justice of Verdun together with the offices of the sous-préfecture of the Meuse.
