History
Santa María del Tejo was founded in the 12th century, and received properties and rights in the area from Alfonso VIII. It may briefly have been an abbey, but if so by the early 13th century it had already been reduced to the status of priory.
From 1515, the property was leased out to laypeople. The surviving church preserves some of its original Romanesque fabric.
