History
The origins of this monastic church are poorly documented, but may trace to the 4th century. It is first securely attested in the documentary evidence ca. 800. In the 970s, Benedict VII gave the church and monastery to Sergius of Damascus, who established a dual rite Latin/Greek monastery there. These monks were replaced first by Cluniac monks, and then in 1231 by Premonstratensians.
In 1426, the monastery became part of the Hieronymite Order. The church was substantially rebuilt in the 18th century, but the 13th-century, 5-storey brick campanile was preserved.
Today the church is in the possession of the Somaschi Fathers, while the former monastic complex is in state possession as a centre for Roman studies.
