History
Nová Říše was founded ca. 1211, by tradition by husband and wife Markvard and Vojslava of Hrádek, as a community of Premonstratensian sisters. The monastery was badly damaged during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century and a number of the sisters were killed. Reconstruction was a lengthy process. From 1641, it was a community of Premonstratensian men. The monastery church was destroyed in a fire in 1683. From 1733, the priory was elevated to the rank of an abbey.
During World War Two, a number of the abbey's brothers were imprisoned in German concentration camps, where many died. Following the war, the Communist regime prevented the community from resuming its life at Nová Říše. The Premonstratensian Order regained possession of the monastic complex in 1991.
