Founded in 1246 by Mechtild von Meißen-Landsberg, Blankenberg's affiliation was soon altered in accordance from Premonstratensian to Cistercian with the wishes expressed by her husband, Heinrich III, count of Sayn, in his will. It is probable that the Premonstratensian community at Blankenberg was only ever planned and never properly established.
