History
Eppenberg was founded in the 1210s, and its first sisters came from Ahnaberg. Relations between Eppenberg and its parent house were often strained, and by mid-century the monastery was independent.
Following complains about lax discipline from Ludwig I, Landgrave of Hesse, Eppenberg became a community of Carthusian men by 1440. Eppenberg was secularised in 1527 and the site passed into private hands. Much of the surviving monastic complex burned down in 1957 following a lightning strike. Today its former gatehouse houses a museum about bees.
