History
The origins of this house are obscure, although its name suggests that there was originally a hermitage on the site. The establishment of a monastery at Ermida do Paiva in the mid-12th century is by tradition associated with a "Robert", who may have been from France and/or have been a Premonstratensian, but there is no real documentary evidence for this. However, an inscription over the south door tympanum dating to 1214 appears to confirm actual links to the order and the date of consecration.
The church at Ermida do Paiva and some partial remains of the cloister still stand. The church underwent conservation work 1950s-1980s and again in 2004.
