History
Lorsch was founded in 764 as a Benedictine abbey, and enjoyed strong imperial ties in the early Middle Ages. From 1248, it was a Premonstratensian house. In 1461, the abbey was mortgaged to the Electoral Palatinate.
The abbey was suppressed in 1556/57 by Elector Ottheinrich of the Palatinate. Its library holdings were sent to Heidelberg. Much of the former monastic complex was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
