History
Villoria de Órbigo was founded in 1243 by Rodrigo Fernández de Valduerna and Teresa Froilaz, lord and lady of Astorga. It enjoyed a period of prosperity in the 14th and 15th centuries.
From 1511, it was a house of Premonstratensian women. The sisters came from Santa Sofia de Toro. Following a major fire, between 1665 and 1774 the community was based in Astorga. The monastery was badly damaged by another fire in the 1980s.
In 2015, the last sisters left Villoria de Órbigo. Since 2018, some Premonstratensian canons have occupied the site.
