History
A monastic community existed at Børglum by the 1130s, and it was a Premonstratensian house by the 1180s. The abbey church was the cathedral of the bishopric of Børglum by 1220, while the canons formed its cathedral chapter. Thanks to royal patronage, the community prospered and was one of the largest landowners in the region.
The abbey was dissolved following the Reformation in 1536, and the property reverted to the crown, while the abbey church became a Lutheran parish church. The other claustral buildings now house a museum.
