History
The religious settlement at Bellpuig el Vell had its origin in an eremitical settlement in a natural cave on the site. In 1166, Ermengol VII and Dolça, count and countess of Urgell, endowed the community with property and it became a monastery of the Premonstratensian Order under the name of Santa Maria de Bellpuig.
However, the brothers soon moved to a new site at nearby Bellpuig Nou, or Bellpuig de les Avellanes.
Some ruins are still visible on the site.
