History
Aubeterre was founded by husband and wife Gilbert and Poncia and their daughter Pétronille. It was dependent on the nearby Premonstratensian abbey of Neuffontaines, itself founded by Gilbert. Few documents referring to the community before the early sixteenth century survive.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Aubeterre was under the authority of the abbot of Neuffontaines, who appointed the community's prioress. However, it is not clear whether the sisters living there still identified as Premonstratensian. The prioress Magdelaine de Symiers (d. 1603) first entered the religious life in the Benedictine monastery of Marcigny-les-Nonnains.
Aubeterre was suppressed in the first half of the 17th century and it became a simple priory of Neuffontaines. The community's chapel, still extant, contains 13/14th century frescoes.
