{"id":3294,"date":"2023-10-08T19:35:38","date_gmt":"2023-10-08T23:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yvonneseale.org\/blog\/?p=3294"},"modified":"2023-10-08T19:36:42","modified_gmt":"2023-10-08T23:36:42","slug":"public-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yvonneseale.org\/blog\/2023\/10\/08\/public-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Talk: Spilled Ink, Feuding Monks, and the Field Where Big Steve Died"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, October 27, I&#8217;ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/events.geneseo.edu\/event\/talk_spilled_ink_feuding_monks_and_the_field_where_big_steve_died_the_making_of_a_medieval_book\">giving a public talk<\/a>: \u201cSpilled Ink, Feuding Monks, and the Field Where Big Steve Died: The Making of a Medieval Book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll speak about the origins of the project that gave rise to my and Heather Wacha&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/utorontopress.com\/9781487544836\/the-cartulary-of-premontre\/\">recently published edition<\/a> of the cartulary of Pr\u00e9montr\u00e9, our research process, what the materiality of a medieval manuscript can tell us about the past\u2014and, yes, what we know about Big Steve.<\/p>\n<p>The thirteenth-century cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Pr\u00e9montr\u00e9 is one of the few manuscripts to survive from this important northern French monastery. Offering a window into daily life in the Middle Ages and to contemporary documentary practices, the cartulary of Pr\u00e9montr\u00e9 is a rich source for the socio-economic and religious history of the Picardy and Champagne regions during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is free and open to the public.
