The community moved ten miles to the southeast in 1238 in search of a more favourable location. Fearn Abbey was particularly patronised by the earls of Ross. The monastic complex was enlarged in the mid-15th century.

Following the Reformation, Fearn's church remained in use as a Church of Scotland parish church. It was substantially rebuilt in the 1770s, with further restoration work carried out 2002-03. As of 2023, it is no longer in use as a church.</text>

In ca. 1175, it became a priory of Premonstratensians, who also served as the cathedral chapter. Both cathedral and priory were extended in the 13th century.

Whithorn was a popular pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages as the reputed burial site of St. Ninian. It became a commendatory priory in 1516.

Following the Reformation, the cathedral rapidly fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, a new parish church was built on the site. The site was excavated in the 1880s.</text>
