In the 1270s, the patronage of the abbey passed to the powerful Neville family, but Coverham faced serious economic challenges and damage in warfare in the 14th century. It recovered, and became a powerful regional monastic institution in the later Middle Ages. <br /><br />Coverham was formally dissolved in 1536, but became a rallying point during the ill-fated Pilgrimage of Grace in 1540. The property passed into private hands in 1557, and the monastic complex had fallen into a ruinous state by the 1670s. Some partial ruins survive today, largely incorporated into later buildings. Shap's most well-known abbot was Richard Redman, who was abbot for almost 50 years, as well as Bishop of St Asaph, Exeter and Ely. However, its history is obscure due to a loss of the abbey's archives. Always a small and poorly endowed community, its abbey church was still nonetheless rebuilt and enlarged in the 13th century as part of a general programme of rebuilding. It was sacked twice in the 14th century. <br /><br />Following Eggletone's dissolution in 1540, the property was granted to one Robert Strelley, who converted it into a private residence. The site was uninhabited in the late 18th century, and during the 19th century was turned into a group of dwellings for labourers. Community History St Leonard’s Hospital was founded by Eustace de Vescy 1193-1216. The hospital was an independent religious establishment until 1376 when it was annexed to the Premonstratensian Alnwick Abbey. It appears to have fallen into disuse before the Reformation.<br /><br />The buried remains of the hospital were partially uncovered in the 1840s and include a chapel, well, hospital buildings and a burial ground. The upstanding remains are largely those of the lower walls of the chapel and a domestic range to the south which were reconstructed in 1848.
